BALTIMORE, MD, October 6, 2021— Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Baltimore has been awarded $800,000 in funding through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Community Economic Development (CED) Grant Awards.
NHS of Baltimore will use $800,000 in CED Grant Awards funds to expand seven businesses and construct a food hall at Walbrook Mill in Baltimore. The funding will support construction costs to build out The Mill, a fully licensed food hall, to serve the business and labor needs of participating vendors by providing an affordable retail space with lower barriers to entry and cash requirements than a traditional stand-alone restaurant. The Mill will create a location for seven food entrepreneurs to operate their businesses in a supportive environment that provides healthy food options and catalyzes further investment in the community. The project will also create jobs for members of the community.
This year, $14.6 million in CED funds were awarded to 20 new grantees implementing projects across the country. Collectively, these new grants will create/expand over 35 businesses resulting in the creation of more than 600 new jobs in low-income communities.

NHS offers affordable loans to purchase, improve, and keep homeowners in their homes. We also offer consumer loans and partner with employers to offer small dollar loans to their employees through our Community Loan Center of The Chesapeake’s Small Dollar Loan Program. The program is an affordable, risk-free alternative to payday and car title loans.
