For Yolanda H., saving her childhood home wasn’t just about property, it was about preserving her father’s legacy. When the home her late father, an Army veteran, once proudly owned was at risk of foreclosure, Yolanda turned to NHS of Baltimore for guidance, support, and hope.
Referred by her godmother, Yolanda came to NHS feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. “I was a nervous wreck,” she admits. “As a first-time homebuyer, I didn’t know much about the process. But from the very beginning, the NHS team was patient, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive.”
Yolanda participated in financial coaching, one-on-one housing counseling, the homebuyer education workshop, and ultimately worked with NHS to secure a mortgage to reclaim the home that meant so much to her family. What could have been a daunting and isolating experience became one filled with reassurance and personal connection.
She credits much of that to her loan officer, Stephanie David-Walker. “Stephanie was amazing—she needs a raise!” Yolanda laughs. “I was flustered and panicking, thinking I was going to lose my father’s house. But Stephanie looked me in the eyes and asked, ‘Do I look like I’m worried?’ That one sentence gave me the peace and confidence I needed to keep going.”
The journey wasn’t short (it took nine months to complete the process) but NHS stayed by her side every step of the way. “Everyone I worked with (Stephanie, Sombo, Aliyah, and all the partners) were remarkable. It was clear this is more than just a job to them.”
Now, Yolanda proudly owns her father’s home. It’s more than a roof over her head; it’s a symbol of perseverance, a tribute to a veteran, and the continuation of a family’s story in Baltimore.
Her advice to others? “If you don’t use NHS, it would be a big mistake. They go above and beyond. NHS is a blessing, and Stephanie is a miracle worker. All the glory to God—through Him and NHS, I saved my dad’s home.”
