In June 2023, Arthur and Adriane Allen experienced a devastating house fire that severely damaged the Baltimore home they had owned for decades. Without homeowners insurance and with their savings exhausted, the road to recovery initially seemed uncertain. Today, thanks to the dedication of community partners and the support of Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Baltimore, the Allens are back home—marking a powerful example of resilience, partnership, and neighborhood reinvestment in action.
Rising After a Devastating Loss
The fire, which began behind the Allens’ home and quickly spread inside, left the residence uninhabitable and caused significant damage to the structure and belongings accumulated over many years. Rebuilding required approximately $150,000 in repairs, a cost that would have been impossible for the family to manage alone.
Despite the challenges, the Allens remained determined to return home. Friends, neighbors, and community supporters stepped forward, helping raise emergency funds while local housing and community organizations worked collaboratively to assemble the resources needed for long-term rebuilding.
Partnership That Made Recovery Possible
NHS Baltimore played a central role in coordinating the recovery effort. Working alongside the Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development and multiple community partners, NHS helped secure several funding sources that covered a substantial portion of the rebuilding costs. Advocacy from local leaders, technical expertise from housing partners, and contractor support helped move the project from uncertainty to completion.
Through these combined efforts, the majority of the reconstruction cost was covered, allowing the family to finance the remaining balance over time and return to a safe, restored home.
